Bournemouth’s Christmas Market opens today – and traders are hopeful of a good season despite the recession.

Despite the latest unemployment and inflation figures, and amidst the backdrop of recession, people are enjoying the festive atmosphere and already starting their Christmas shopping.

Stallholder Wallis Edwards, 21, who runs a stall selling Christmas stockings and other festive gifts, said:

“This is our second year of being at the market. We’ve tried to keep more of a range of prices this year, to reflect the recession – but if people want something I think they’ll buy it anyway”.

The annual festive offering runs through until Christmas Eve.

Primark – A Welcome Addition to Bournemouth

LARGE fashion shops are anticipating the long awaited arrival of Primark to Bournemouth town centre.

Competitors such as New Look are embracing the store’s opening as good news rather than dreading the possibility of increased rivalry.

Manager of Bournemouth New Look, Kerry Homer, is positive that “it would bring more customers here”.

She added: “I’m not overly concerned for our store as we have started to look at selling more consessions and a different range of clothing that Primark don’t offer.”

Town Centre Manager, Roger Parker said: “It is sad to see the end of BHS, but Primark is a welcome addition to the town and will help to attract a lot more people.”

The Dolphin Shopping Centre in Poole experienced a substantial rise in sales across exisiting shops when Primark opened in place of Littlewoods.

Poole Town Centre Manager, Richard Randall-Jones said: “There is no doubt at all that Primark had a positive effect on the town.

“It created a real buzz amongst retailers and the public alike and will most certainly do the same for Bournemouth.”

The new store, which is set to begin trading by Christmas, will replace BHS on Commercial Road.
