Art Exhibitions Organised by Bournemouth Photographer

Paper-pusher by day, but arts promoter by night, Beth Rose is a woman who is using her spare time to help people who share her passion for photography.

As an office worker, Beth pursues her passion in her free time which she also uses to set up the Bodak photography exhibition.

The aim is for photographers in Dorset to gain recognition for their work through the exhibitions by local people and also fellow photographers.

Beth said: “It’s a brilliant opportunity for local photographers to get their work seen and to meet other people in the industry. Plus there is some very good and exciting photography on show!”

Beth, set up the art exhibition, in Bournemouth, where local artists can display their work in the hope they would win a competition for a weekend photography master class.

To set this event up Beth organised a venue where they could be held regularly, The Winchester Pub, as well as finding a sponsor in the form of Tony and Holly from Shoot Studios.

The Bodak events have been going since November and have proved a hit with attendees and artists.

Beth said: “The exhibitions have been fairly successful so far, word is getting round and we have had very positive feedback. Mark Berry & Louise Keeley of The Winchester have been wonderful in providing the venue and have worked very hard to make BODAK a good event.”

These monthly events have been showcasing four different photographers each night and on the night one person gets chosen to go through to the next round where they hope to win a weekend master class with well-known photographer Andy Scaysbrook.

Beth said: “The competition has been going since January this year, and we have had five showcases so far.

On June 8th, Roman Sakovich won the master class weekend which was a joint decision by Andy Scaysbrook, Tony and Holly from Shoot Studios and Beth herself.

Roman, who is originally from Lithuania, moved to England to explore a new culture and has just finished his third year in Bournemouth’s Arts University College. Photography is part of his passion for art however he also wants to explore all areas of art.

Roman said: “At the moment, I am saving money to make a documentary project in the biggest underground laboratory in the world, which is located in Italy.”

Beth, who is 26 and lives in Bournemouth, has been interested in photography since her early teens.

Originally from Basingstoke, Beth moved down South aged four with her family, where she finds her inspiration in her surrounding areas.

Beth got hooked on photography by using disposable cameras which showed off her raw talent.

Beth said: “I loved taking photos on disposable cameras and then finding out how they’d turn out after being processed. That got me hooked.”

In her spare time, away from photography and organising Bodak events, Beth enjoys going for walks along the beach and countryside as well as visiting restaurants and going to the cinema.

Beth is interested in all different types of photography including landscapes and the different effects of colour and black and white.

These exhibitions have also helped broaden Beth’s horizons in photography by the slideshow that is presented at each exhibition.

Beth said: “Doing the slideshow has introduced me to many inspirational photographers, such as Martin Parr, Luigi Ghirri and Joel Meyerowitz.”

Beth’s much-loved photograph she has taken is of a surfer on his board. She has altered this picture to make the photograph stand out more.

She said: “My favourite photograph of mine is that of a surfer kneeling on his board and looking out to sea. I love the shape his body makes and the thoughtfulness of the pose. I converted it to black and white to make his silhouette stand out against the background even more. You always get a peaceful and contemplative feeling when I look at it.”

In the future Beth is hoping to continue building her portfolio and expand by selling more as well as starting her own path for herself and continue her passion as her job as well as hobby.

“I’d love to continue building my portfolio of photographs, for pleasure and possibly for sale. I’d also like to merge my business knowledge with photography and start my own venture,” said Beth.

The next exhibition will be online on www.bodak.co.uk with quarterly exhibitions in a venue which will be announced closer to the time.

Bournemouth Air Festival Encouraged to go Green

A million flying fans are being told to reach for their pushbikes or hop on the nearest bus or train this summer to ensure a cleaner, greener Bournemouth Air Festival.

Council officers are blaming enthusiasts, who flocked to the town to see the event last summer, for an increase in pollution.

“The main environmental impact was the CO2 emissions generated from people travelling to and from Bournemouth,” said a council spokesman. “The aviation fuel consumed by the aircraft on display is only a small fraction of this.”

The Air Festival, which is scheduled for August 19 to 22, has been running for two years.

Marc West, Planning & Schedules Manager for the Yellow Buses, said: “For the last two years we’ve added extra buses to cope with the demand during the Air Festival days. We plan to do the same this year for what has become a highly successful event.”

Bournemouth Council is hoping to make all areas for Bournemouth’s Tourism greener and not just the weekend of the Air Festival.

Cllr Stephen MacLoughlin said: “I want Bournemouth’s tourism industry to be the most sustainable in Britain.”

Bournemouth residents get first dibs on beach huts

NEW beach huts being built in Undercliffe Drive are exclusive to Bournemouth residents.

The well-known beach huts which will be painted in yellows, greens and blues are due to be built and available to lease holders at the end of the summer.

Charmaine Andrews, Seafront Development Assistant for Bournemouth council, said: “Customers currently on the beach hut waiting lists were given the first opportunity to lease a new hut site, but a limited number of sites are now available to anyone who lives in Bournemouth.“

The beach huts are well known for their simple design and bright colours ,which is why they are packed out during the summer months.

“All sites will be leased on a first come, first served basis so I would urge people to be quick in contacting us if they would like one of the new sites,” added Charmaine.

Residents interested in leasing the huts should call the Seafront office on Bournemouth 451781.

The lease from the council is £750 per year, not including beach hut rates.

World Cup Scam Hits Bournemouth

A world cup lottery scam is being targeted at people in Bournemouth, according to trading standards officers.

With just three days until the kick-off, letters have been landing on doormats demanding bank details from the recipients.

The “Euro Millions Fifa World Cup Super Lottery Program” tells people they have won a sum of money up to £800,000 and all they need to do is provide contact and bank details.

David Morton, Senior Trading Standards Officer, said: “This type of scam isn’t new, there have been many similar examples; however, when someone receives a letter through the door which claims to be linked to the World Cup it can be very convincing.”

These scams are not aimed at anyone in particular and so everyone is being warned not to reply to these letters and to report them to Consumer Direct immediately.

Cllr David Smith, Cabinet Member for Community, said: “We have a duty to protect our residents from such scams and we will take all necessary action to warn the community.”

Bournemouth Councillor Defends Move

Alasdair Murray welcomes Paul Hughes to the Lib Dems

BOURNEMOUTH Borough Councillor, Paul Hughes, defends his decision to switch from Conservative to Liberal Democrat just three days before the general election.

Cllr Paul Hughes, 27, who was elected to represent Winton East in 2007, has joined Cllr Michael Griffiths, 29, who switched parties last week joining the Liberal Democrats.

“I do hope that my move will spark some questions for voters and encourage them to vote Liberal Democrat,” said Cllr Paul Hughes, who is now backing the Lib Dem candidate Alasdair Murray.

He added: “Alasdair clearly cares a lot about Bournemouth whereas Conor Burns just strikes me as a career politician parachuted into what the Tories considered a ‘safe seat’”.

Bournemouth West constituency is currently Conservative however the faith in Conservatives was rocked when current MP, Sir Jon Butterfill, was involved in the expenses and lobbying scandal.

With these recent changes by the councillors voters may be thinking more about who they will vote for.

Alasdair Murray, Liberal Democratic candidate for Bournemouth West, hopes voters will take note.

“Clearly the decisions of the two councillors to leave raises questions about the direction of the Conservatives and that may end up being a factor in some people’s thinking,” said Mr Murray.

“We have been getting an increasingly good reception on the doorstep and feel we are in with a good chance,” he added.

Thursday will show exactly what impact this decision by Cllr Paul Hughes and Cllr Michael Griffiths has really had on the Conservatives.

Spring Clean Recycling in Winton

SPRING time clear out was on the agenda for Winton residents on Saturday morning.

Books, toys and bed linen were just some of the items up for grabs on the Give and Take day organised by Bournemouth Borough Council.

From 10am till 1pm residents gave in unwanted items from their homes that people could take free of charge to reuse.

“The aim of today is to recycle,” said Sue Weall from Bournemouth Borough Council. “People get the chance to clear out their attics and drawers.”

Many people attended the day including Councillor Elaine Cooper, who said: “This is a very good idea, it is well attended and good for hoarders.”

Give and Take days have been going on in Bournemouth since July 2009.

“Since we started in July last year it has carried on because there is so much interest and nothing gets wasted,” said Georgina Lamb, the Recycling Officer for Bournemouth Borough Council.

Any items that are left over get picked up by MIND charity and anything else that they are not able to sell on is taken by the recycling company WNS.

Green Energy was pitched outside offering advice on making homes more energy efficient while refreshments and homemade cakes were being sold inside.
